Summer has arrived...and so have kittens!

PictureHappy 4th of July!
There are kittens everywhere and it doesn't seem like the influx will stop.  All of the shelters are working hard to put kittens and queens out in foster, adoption floor space is limited only by the size of the facilities and numbers of cages, adoption specials are taking place and it is no fault of the animals.  If it were possible, I would fill each room of my house with foster kittens and cats, but I believe that would be more than I could handle...I can have a dream, right?
The month of June has been a fun time around our foster home.  We have been fostering a great group of four kittens for Charleston Animal Society, and they have probably been only fun and games to have around.  They are playful, vocal and make us laugh every day.  Individually they are not very vocal, but when they are together and asking for a meal or to be picked up for a loving session they can sound like a full chorus rather than the quartet they are.  We have given them foster names of some musicians that the older generation may know:  Lena, Louis, Ella and Etta.  Lena and Louis are 'best buddies' while Ella and Etta like hanging out together.  They all get along with each other and play together well.  There is the typical play fighting of kittens every day, and Louis has taught several of them how not to share their toys (growls and possessiveness by running to another room caring the item in their mouths) is an almost daily occurrence.  It makes us giggle every time because sometimes this will happen when a kitten is playing in a room alone with no threat of having its toy taken away.
The girls (Ella, Etta and Lena) are sweet, but not needy.  They do meow to be held and rubbed a couple times a days, and Lena is probably the biggest cuddle baby of the girls and has started sleeping on the bed with me.  The award for cuddles and companionship, however, must be given to the little boy of the group - Louis.  Louis enjoys sleeping next to my neck or shoulder every night and he likes being in the office with me during the day and napping on the pillow I keep on the corner of my desk.  While all the kittens do not sleep in the bed with me, they do like to sleep in the bedroom (most recently Ella and Etta have slept together on the top of their cat tower).  Each kitten has their own webpage on Adopt Charleston Cats if you would like to learn more or see photos.  Simply click on the heading "Foster Kittens Waiting to Meet You" and visit the Dew Fosters' pages.  We anticipate these four will be ready for surgery in the next week or so, and at that time can go home to their forever families.  Let us know if you have any interest or would like to arrange a meet and greet.
Not all of the month was focused on the quartet, however.  Former foster cat and queen, Abbey, was adopted and very much loved by her new owners.  Unfortunately, she did not integrated into the home with the other pet cats.  Many different approaches were used and a number of attempts to get her to live in harmony, but it became apparent she was not happy sharing her humans.  We are pleased to advise she was not returned to the shelter, but rather a private rehoming was done and she has now been transported to North Carolina to a home where she will be an only pet and can be queen of her castle.
We wish everyone a safe and happy Independence Day this week.  Please keep your felines (and dogs) indoors and safe from any fireworks.  Shelters are already full, and they typically see a population increase of strays around the time South Carolina celebrates the holidays with fireworks.  Until next time, have a fun summer!

Having owned cats all my life, when we put our last pet to rest after 17 years the decision was made to begin fostering kittens from our local No Kill shelter.  Many kittens and several cats later, it is rewarding to help the community and find wonderful, loving homes for the felines.  This website will include some thoughts, emotions, challenges, and best of all the enjoyments from the rewarding fostering experience.  It will also highlight cats available for adoption from local area shelters.

I am not a veterinarian nor vet technician.  It is only for the love of cats and a life-time commitment of their care from neonatal abandoned kittens to aging cats that I have developed a few skills and learned along my journey of caring.

Adopt Charleston Cats highlights some of the cats and kittens currently in the care of Charleston Animal Society, Dorchester Paws, Pet Helpers, and Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary located in the Lowcountry of, South Carolina. More are available for adoption, but we will show a few that are either on an adoption floor, Pounce Cat Cafe + Wine Bar, available for adoption from their foster home, or soon to be available for adoption. We also highlight adoptable felines available through individuals (primarily rescuers/TNR) and these animals are fully vetted. Periodically, we will also highlight kittens and cats available for adoption through agencies from surrounding counties.
Please consider adoption by visiting each facilities' website to learn how you can visit and meet your next furry friend or contact us to be connected to a rescuer.
Thank you for looking.
