We hope everyone had a safe and purrfect Thanksgiving.  Tori was a happy kitty during her first Thanksgiving, and she enjoyed her Friskies Turkey & Giblets with some pure pumpkin added to her dinner.  She continues to move forward in her recovery from the upper respiratory infection.  Tori's doing so well that she has an appointment this week to see the veterinary staff at Pet Helpers to begin her vaccinations.

We anticipate Tori will be available for adoption very soon, therefore, we have now added her own page to our website.  Please take a moment to click on Tori's name on the navigation bar above to read more about her and see a number of recent photographs of this cutie.  As always, you can send a message to us (contact form is on our home page) or email us (mail icon is in the header of each website page for your convenience).  Since Tori will be available for adoption through Pet Helpers, you can also contact them to learn more.  It is our hope that as soon as Tori has been spayed, she can move to her forever home without spending a night in the shelter environment.

We will update more about Tori after her appointment, and in the meanwhile, we hope everyone has a great week!

Tori's Roller Coaster

PictureTori at 7 weeks
Tori is a strong little girl and doing her best to get on the other side of her upper respiratory infection.  This baby has now received three different antibiotics (the third began on Friday) and continues to receive eye ointment, regular steam treatments, warm compresses on her eyes, and we now regularly are working to keep her lungs clear.  It's been a challenge, but she's doing great in staying upbeat and still loves to play for hours throughout the day between her steams and long naps.

She was improving nicely until Wednesday evening when it appeared she was getting a little more congested.  Because of this symptom I increased her time in the steam and kept close watch over her.  On Thursday she played, but spent so much of the day sleeping.  In the afternoon, it was evident she was in need of further evaluation based on her physical signs.  She returned to Pet Helpers to see the vet again on Friday and was put on the stronger antibiotic.  It's still a bit up and down, but she is amazingly playful.  To watch her play, you would never know this little one is sick.  We will continue all the treatments this week, including steam sessions through the night to ensure she has every available chance to heal.  Thankfully, she enjoys the taste of her new cherry-flavored antibiotic and doesn't fuss to take it like she did with the last antibiotic.

One thing that having the URI hasn't affected is Tori's appetite.  She eats until her little belly is buldging, and is now over two pounds both on ourhome scale as well at Pet Helpers.  She's doing everything in her power to kick this and grow into a beautiful cat one day.

This week we ask that you say a little prayer for her healing and send her wishes of getting well soon.  Tori will appreciate anything good thoughts you can give.  Thanking you in advance.

A Big Welcome for Tori

The newest foster kitten has arrived, and we are happy to announce the introduction of one of Pet Helper's newest additions, Tori.  She came into our home on November 6 and immediately showed how sweet of a kitten she is.  Tori is approximately 6 weeks old and needs foster care while she is getting over an upper respiratory infection (URI).  She is on a couple of medications and has been struggling to get better; however, today she has shown improvement and is no longer running a fever, she physically looks better (maybe in part due to all the steam baths she's received), and tonight she has played a good bit of the evening.  She's proving to be a survivor, and we are very fortunate to be a part of her life for several weeks.

Tori has been great at using her litter pan, has a nice appetite even with all of the nasal congestion, and in addition to enjoying "talking" with me she loves to have her belly rubbed.  She likes "making biscuits" and purrs without hesitation. It's not uncommon to find her sleeping on her back and once she is well, it is with confidence that it can be said she will likely enjoy resting on her back and in our arms like the nice baby she is.  Right now, she tries, but due to the congestion she can't remain in that position too long.  We are looking forward to her getting better every day now that we have seen a day of improvement.

Here are updates on the most recent fosters.  This past week I have heard from the forever families of Taffy (she's doing great and growing), Sylvester & Sneakers (they are enjoying their new home and by the photo received today are growing so big), and Hamster (we recently received a picture of him and his little brother, Dexter, both sitting in their family's living room together).  It's always a happy day when a foster parent gets to see how well a past furbaby is doing.

For all the fosters out in the world, thank you to everyone involved in rescue, saving lives, and finding and providing forever homes for all.  May you find happiness in all the snuggles and kisses your pet can provide
.

Hamster's Busy Halloween

What happens when a special needs cat enters foster care, you might ask?  For Hamster, it was 229 days of being spoiled, cared for, and being a constant companion to this foster mom who will always have a special place in her heart for Mr. Blue Eyes.  While many families were preparing their children for Halloween trick or treating, I was in the process of transporting and delivering Hamster to his forever family.  Thankfully, Hamster is a wonderful traveler and the ride from Charleston to just across the North Carolina state line was made with relative ease.

The first stop we made when we arrived to North Carolina was a visit to my mother.  Hamster checked out her living quarters for about 15 minutes, had a bite to eat, drank some water, and used his litter pan.  After all 'chores' were complete, he decided it was time to mark the new human temporarily in his life by continually rubbing against her legs and requesting head rubs, which were freely given.

During the Halloween night thunderstorms, he was reloaded into his carrier and into the car at which time he was driven to his new owners.  He met one of his family members while still in the carrier, and he will have more formal introduction to his feline younger brother, Dexter, at a later time.  They did, however, play a little 'pawsies' under the door on Friday night - a favorite thing for Hamster to do when he had the foster kittens in the house.  His getting acquainted with his new humans went well, but he was very tired and had a hard time keeping his eyes opened.  However, that didn't stop him for checking out their bedroom where he was kept this weekend and he still found enough energy to play a bit with some cat toys (his new mom had purchased lots of new, fun stuff for Hamster and Dexter).

Over the weekend, reports are that he is settling in great and spent the first night sleeping under the covers with his new human guardians.  He started his Saturday morning by climbing on to his mom's chest to receive petting and love while he returned purrs to her.

He will be greatly missed, but this foster mama will be looking forward to updates and receiving photos.  An added bonus is while he lives 3-1/2 hours away, he lives in a city that I visit often for both family visits and business - we will certainly plan visits to see him and his new family on occasion.

For now, this foster home is empty since Sylvester (now Oreo) and Sneakers (now Zeus) went to their forever home together on Tuesday and Hamster moved on Friday.  It will be quiet here for several days, but stay tuned for updates on the next foster(s) and their stories.  In the meantime, have a wonderful and safe week everyone.  Thanks for reading.

Having owned cats all my life, when we put our last pet to rest after 17 years the decision was made to begin fostering kittens from our local No Kill shelter.  Many kittens and several cats later, it is rewarding to help the community and find wonderful, loving homes for the felines.  This website will include some thoughts, emotions, challenges, and best of all the enjoyments from the rewarding fostering experience.  It will also highlight cats available for adoption from local area shelters.

I am not a veterinarian nor vet technician.  It is only for the love of cats and a life-time commitment of their care from neonatal abandoned kittens to aging cats that I have developed a few skills and learned along my journey of caring.
