PictureTori Cuddle Time
Without a foster in the house, the routine of the day isn't the same.  There are so many emotions and thoughts that are present whenever the home is an empty nest.  The house is quiet and there's no activity.

Pet Helpers foster kitten, Tori, had her adoption finalized on December 22 and moved from her foster home to her forever home that evening.  What I will miss most about Tori is how much she loved playing tag or hide-and-seek with us.  She is a ball of energy, and to watch her run through the house and bounce off the walls (literally) was always entertaining.  Even with all her activity, she was also a kitten that enjoyed sleeping her nights away at the foot of the bed, hanging out on the back of the couch when we were watching TV, and would also enjoy some cuddle time in our lap.

Foster cat, Indigo, is unfortunately not in the house as she was taken to Charleston Animal Society on Sunday morning because of an injury.  We had a red fox walk across the back yard and when Indigo saw it, she ran to all the windows trying to see that sly fox again.  In the process, her tail was caught in the back of a dining room chair and she was unable to free herself until I put the chair on the floor.  It was traumatic and she has fractured her tail in the process.  Charleston Animal Society made radiographs and they are keeping her on pain medications, and they believe it will heal on its own.

So, what does a foster mom do whenever there aren't litter pans to be cleaned, cats to be fed, felines to be played with, or babies to be loved on?  This morning, I don't know.  Whenever we are an empty nest, I wake up during the night and my first thought is I no longer have a furry bed buddy.  My morning routine is lazy.  Whenever I want to hug or pet on a furbaby, there aren't any.  The physical work that is involved in fostering isn't missed this morning, but there is an overwhelming need to have one of God's creatures in the house.  Watching morning TV doesn't come close to matching the laughter I have when watching fosters.

Home for the Holidays

PictureIndigo's back in the house
Do you like the idea of being home or someplace familiar for the holidays?  That's what we hope for Charleston Animal Society's Adoption Ambassador, Indigo.  She first entered CAS's doors in January 2013 with a leg injury.  While her previously fractured leg was healing, she developed an upper respiratory infection in the shelter environment.  This was a primary reason she was sent out to foster and came into our lives on February 12, 2013, and remained with us for two months while her leg healed and before being adopted from our home.  However, her adoptive family has recently experienced changes and surrender of Indigo was necessary.

With the help of social media and a network of foster mamas, a temporary home was found for Indigo earlier in the week until such time we could make arrangements.  When I returned home from a business trip, a visit to Charleston Animal Society was made and they graciously agreed to allow Indigo back in the Adoption Ambassador program and for us to foster her until a new family can be found.  THANK YOU to Charleston Animal Society, because without this arrangement there is no telling what might have happened to this beautiful gal because she does not appreciate life in a cage of a shelter.

Indigo is now a 2-3 year old cat, and while she has understandable confusion of the happenings of this past week, she does appear to have some memories of our home.  She's now been introduced to our foster kitten, Tori, and while there isn't immediate love they are being the typical felines interacting for the first time.  A little hissing and some growls as they work to get to know each other, but Indigo is already a "big sister" wishing for some time away from the "annoying" little sibling - it is cute to see how even in the animal world these interactions can exist.  They are both playful felines, and we don't think it will take them too long start sharing and playing with their toys together.

Tori's upper respiratory infection recovery is doing GREAT and she visited the Pet Helper's veterinarian staff on Friday.  She is a healthy 3.4 pounds, began her vaccinations, and has been scheduled for her spay surgery on Monday, December 15.  Once spayed, she if available for adoption and can be picked up that afternoon from Pet Helpers by her new family, come back to foster while we search for her new home, or if a potential adopter wants to adopt her and have us keep her in foster until a particular date (Christmas, for instance), we will be happy to arrange for that as well.  Tori's new family will need to be human guardians that are wanting an entertaining and playful kitten in their life, but one that likes to also sleep at the foot of your bed or on the couch next to you.  She is a bit talkative, but typically she waits for you to start the conversation.

For the present time, we have both felines available for adoption, but it may be best for Indigo to not have another home disruption for a couple of weeks.  If anyone is interested in adopting fun-loving Tori, please do not hesitate to contact Adoption Charleston Cats by email, the contact form found on our home page, or through Facebook.  You may also contact Pet Helpers, but it is our intention that Tori will not be on the adoption floor and she will stay with us until adopted.  Meet and greets can be arranged.  In the meantime, be sure to check out Tori's page here on our website for more details and pictures.

Let's get Tori home for the holidays as well as all the other cats and kittens ready and waiting in Charleston County shelters and foster care!

Until next time, may your life be filled with purrfect days and furry friends.

Having owned cats all my life, when we put our last pet to rest after 17 years the decision was made to begin fostering kittens from our local No Kill shelter.  Many kittens and several cats later, it is rewarding to help the community and find wonderful, loving homes for the felines.  This website will include some thoughts, emotions, challenges, and best of all the enjoyments from the rewarding fostering experience.  It will also highlight cats available for adoption from local area shelters.

I am not a veterinarian nor vet technician.  It is only for the love of cats and a life-time commitment of their care from neonatal abandoned kittens to aging cats that I have developed a few skills and learned along my journey of caring.

Adopt Charleston Cats highlights some of the cats and kittens currently in the care of Charleston Animal Society, Dorchester Paws, Pet Helpers, and Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary located in the Lowcountry of, South Carolina. More are available for adoption, but we will show a few that are either on an adoption floor, Pounce Cat Cafe + Wine Bar, available for adoption from their foster home, or soon to be available for adoption. We also highlight adoptable felines available through individuals (primarily rescuers/TNR) and these animals are fully vetted. Periodically, we will also highlight kittens and cats available for adoption through agencies from surrounding counties.
Please consider adoption by visiting each facilities' website to learn how you can visit and meet your next furry friend or contact us to be connected to a rescuer.
Thank you for looking.
