New Family and New Names

PictureThe return trip to Charleston Animal Society for surgery and official adoption day!
Today was a big day for Sylvester and Sneakers!

The kittens had a late-night second dinner on Monday evening and ate nice portion sizes before all food was put away.  I imagined that they would be crying this morning for an early breakfast since they did not have their dry food to nibble on during the overnight hours, but they were quiet and well behaved.  When I went into their room this morning, Sneakers was quick to let me know he was hungry because during the time Sylvester was asking for attention, Sneakers laid down on their food mat precisely where their canned food dish is placed.  Poor boy was disappointed that the only thing he was able to have this morning was a teaspoon of canned food, but it did seem to take care of the hungry.  Although the meal was only a small snack, it satisfied both boys and they played and ran around before being placed in their carrier.  Once in the car, the first part of the drive was filled with meows (typical for them), but they calmed down and were taking naps before we arrived at Charleston Animal Society.

The turn-in is always a bit emotional as weeks of care for these small lives is coming to an end.  To end this particular foster group brings so many mixed emotions because there is success in lives saved and another family will be welcoming these bundles of fun into their lives, but at the same time we will no longer be witness to their play, wacky movements, weird sleeping positions, etc.  Even with the happy and sad feelings, fostering brings so much a feeling of reward because we have helped raise this particular pair from their initial 4/10 of a pound to two pounds (Sylvester) and two-and-a-half pounds (Sneakers).  They are such healthy kittens.

They came into our lives for less than two months, but will always have a place in my heart.  Fortunately, these two brothers will be 'forever brothers' and will not be living too far away.  I will be looking forward to the periodic updates and photos from their 'forever mama' and also look forward to visiting with them from time to time.  Their new names are Zeus (Sneakers) and Oreo (Sylvester), and they each will have their own human to choose to cuddle up with.

It is interesting that while Hamster seemed to mourn the exit of our last foster (Taffy), he almost seemed happy to see these two boys in their carrier and out the door.  Silly Hamster!  He has enjoyed the calmness today, I believe, and has enjoyed long naps without kitten faces running up to him and having kittens attempt to play with his tail.  The past Saturday I went to Pet Helpers to pick-up Hamster's adoption paperwork.  We will have him in foster only a few more days before he joins his forever family ~ stay tuned for more information on his turnover.

Happy purrs to all and remember, we all look better when we accessorize with cat hair.

The rewards of fostering bring such strong emotions and ties to "our" little babies. It's hard to let go, but knowing they will go to a wonderful new home, makes it all worth it!

DeDe, so very true! Fostering is so many things. Seeing our babies move to wonderful, loving families is bittersweet and special. In particular, I find it so heartwarming when the families are willing to provide updates on their furbabies.

Having owned cats all my life, when we put our last pet to rest after 17 years the decision was made to begin fostering kittens from our local No Kill shelter.  Many kittens and several cats later, it is rewarding to help the community and find wonderful, loving homes for the felines.  This website will include some thoughts, emotions, challenges, and best of all the enjoyments from the rewarding fostering experience.  It will also highlight cats available for adoption from local area shelters.

I am not a veterinarian nor vet technician.  It is only for the love of cats and a life-time commitment of their care from neonatal abandoned kittens to aging cats that I have developed a few skills and learned along my journey of caring.

Adopt Charleston Cats highlights some of the cats and kittens currently in the care of Charleston Animal Society, Dorchester Paws, Pet Helpers, and Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary located in the Lowcountry of, South Carolina. More are available for adoption, but we will show a few that are either on an adoption floor, Pounce Cat Cafe + Wine Bar, available for adoption from their foster home, or soon to be available for adoption. We also highlight adoptable felines available through individuals (primarily rescuers/TNR) and these animals are fully vetted. Periodically, we will also highlight kittens and cats available for adoption through agencies from surrounding counties.
Please consider adoption by visiting each facilities' website to learn how you can visit and meet your next furry friend or contact us to be connected to a rescuer.
